Laredo Bucks News Release
ODESSA, Texas â The Laredo Bucks battled from behind to gain a point before losing 3-2 in a shootout to the Odessa Jackalopes in front of 3,724 fans at Ector County Coliseum. In a goal tending duel Mike Gorman of Odessa stopped 36 of 38 shots and all four in the shootout to end the Bucks 10-game winning streak. The Bucks have recorded points in 26 of the last 28 games. They are 34-5-3 with a CHL best 71 points. Laredo returns home this Wednesday night against the Corpus Christi Rayz at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Face off is set for 7:30 p.m. Call (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) for tickets or more information or go online at www.laredobucks.com.
In the first period the Jackalopes out shot the Bucks 17-7, but neither team was able to score.
In the second period it was the Bucks striking early. Forward Steve Weidlich received a pass in front of the net that he jammed home just 57 seconds in to give the Bucks a 1-0 lead. It was the fifth of the year for Weidlich and his second in the past three games. The Jackalopes came back when former Bucks forward Shaun Fairweather tipped a shot past Laredo goalie David Guerrera at 6:39 to tie the game. Late in the period it was Odessa going on the power play. Forward Mike Rutter fired a shot from the point that forward Matt Price redirected into the net with just 6.9 seconds left in the frame to give the Jackalopes a 2-1 lead.
In the third period the Bucks got into penalty trouble as forward Mike Amodeo was assessed a triple minor at 6:42. Odessa took a penalty on the power play which created a four-on-four situation. With the Bucks trailing by a goal forward Patrik Nilson grabbed the puck behind the net and as he was falling down slipped it in front for forward Jeff Bes who slammed it home to tie the game at 9:11. It was the 25th of the year for Bes and his third straight game with a goal. Neither team was able to score the rest of regulation as both goalies were brilliant.
In over time the Bucks had some chances as they fired five shots, but Gorman was solid. The game went to a shootout and the Jackalopes scored on two of three opportunities while Gorman stopped all four Bucks shooters. FINAL SCORE Odessa 3, Laredo 2 in a shootout.
Guerrera was outstanding as he stopped 40 of 42 shots to get the Bucks a point. His eight game win streak came to an end as his record is now 19-3-1. Gorman allowed just two goals on 38 shots and was perfect in the shootout as he improved to 3-6-0. The Bucks were 0-2 on the power play while the Jackalopes were 1-11.
