MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
Monarchs Relieve Boucek of Head Coaching Duties; GM John Whisenant to Assume Head Coaching Role
Sacramento Monarchs General Manager John Whisenant will assume the Monarchs head coaching role while still maintaining his responsibili- ties as the organization's general manager. Whisenant, currently in his sixth season as the team's general manager, previously coached the Monarchs for three-plus seasons; he took over mid-way through the 2003 season before stepping down at the conclusion of the 2006 season to focus solely on his duties as general manager. Whisenant advanced the Monarchs to the Western Conference Finals all four seasons, including the WNBA Finals in 2005 and 2006 as well as winning the 2005 WNBA Championship and being named WNBA Coach of the Year. He compiled a 76-42 regular season record and 19-10 postseason record during his prior coaching tenure with the team.
Lawson Sets New Franchise Record: Three-Point Field Goals Made
During the July 7 victory over the Chicago Sky, Monarchs guard Kara Lawson set a new Sacramento franchise record in three-point field goals made as she sank her career 315th long-range basket with 4:45 left in the third quarter. Her mark of 315 three-pointers made surpassed the former record of 314, set by Ruthie Bolton; Lawson's career tally now stands at 316.
Double-Digit Rebounding
Sacramento has tallied 10 or more offensive rebounds in all 13 games so far this season and it has out-rebounded all but three of its op- ponents, including a tie in total rebounds with Chicago on June 30. The Monarchs individual season-high in rebounds is 10, as recorded by forward Rebekkah Brunson on July 7 against the Chicago Sky.
