Women and Inspiration

Saturday, June 23 at 7:00 P.M. the Monarchs take on the Detroit Shock in a re-match of the 2006 WNBA Finals. The game will also feature Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts as the halftime speaker of the Women and Inspiration Theme Night. For more information, please go to SacramentoMonarchs.com.

Player of the Week

On June 11, Rebekkah Brunson was honored by the WNBA with the Player of the Week Award for games played on June 4-10. Brunson stepped in for an injured DeMya Walker and led the Monarchs to a 2-1 record on the week by averaging a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, while shooting 58.3 percent (21-for-36) from the field. She also tallied a career-high 21 points on June 5 vs. San Antonio and a career-high 17 rebounds on June 9 vs. Phoenix. Brunson is the first Monarchs player to receive this honor since 2002.

DeMya Walker Sidelined for Season

On June 2, versus the Los Angeles Sparks, Walker injured her right knee with 4:12 remaining in the first quarter at ARCO Arena. She underwent a MRI which confirmed a patellar tendon tear to her right knee. She is expected to be out for the remainder of the 2007 season. Walker will undergo further evaluation and be scheduled for surgery at a later date.

- Nicole Powell led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. She also added five assists.

- The Monarchs outscored the Sky in points in the paint 34-10.

- Candice Dupree led the Sky with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. She also grabbed five rebounds.

- Yolanda Griffith dished out a career-high six assists.

- Monarchs guard Ticha Penicherio scored a team-high 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

- Monarchs forward Kim Smith scored a season-high 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

- Yolanda Griffith and Kara Lawson both added 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting for the Monarchs. Griffith also grabbed a team-high tying nine rebounds.

- Sky forward Candice Dupree scored a game-high tying 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She also added five rebounds.

- Jia Perkins also scored a game-high tying 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting for the Sky. She also dished out a career-high seven assists.

- Sky center Bernadette Ngoyisa recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds

Monarchs/Sky Connections

Sacramento Monarchs guard Chelsea Newton was a member of the Chicago Sky during the 2006 WNBA season. Newton was drafted by the Sky in the 2006 WNBA Expansion Draft from the Monarchs.

Chicago forward Liz Shimek ('06) and Monarchs guard Kristin Haynie ('05), were teammates at Michigan State for three seasons.
