Sacramento Capitals News Release

The Sacramento Capitals recently signed Sam Warburg, the 2004 NCAA Doubles Champion and this year's No. 1 ranked college player in the nation. The Sacramento native, a Jesuit High School standout and recent graduate of Stanford University, is "thrilled to have the opportunity to play" for the Capitals, especially in his home town.

"This (WTT) league is comparable to the NBA and NFL," said Warburg. "I'm enthusiastic and fired up to play for such an up-and-coming league."

Warburg's honors include the 2005 West Region ITA/Ted Farnsworth Senior Player of the Year Award as well as the Pac-10 men's Player of the Year for the second straight season. He and his partner KC Corkery, who finished the 2005 season with a 38-7 overall record, were also named the PAC-10 Doubles Team of the Year.

Last year, when Warburg and Corkery won the NCAA Doubles Championship, they earned a wild card into the 2004 U.S. Open. This year, the reigning college champions fell short in the NCAA semifinals. However, the tandem put together an outstanding season, winning the Wilson/ITA Regional Championship in November, advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championship Final in October and becoming the first Cardinal team since 1999 to win the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in March.
