Likhovtseva captures German Open doubles crown
Caps stalwart Elena Likhovtseva and partner Vera Zvonareva overcame Cara Black and Leizel Huber 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to win the German Open in Berlin on May 8. The Russian pair won their first title as a team.
The No. 3 seeded duo were playing together for the first time this year, reaching the final as a team with Zvonareva collecting her first doubles title of 2005. It was her fourth career doubles triumph while Likhovtseva now owns 23 career doubles titles. Likhovtseva has already won two other doubles victories this year: the Gold Coast crown with Magdalena Maleeva and the Tokyo Pan Pacific title with Janette Husarova. As of May 9, Likhovtseva is ranked No. 6 in doubles and No. 18 in singles.
Auburn Racquet Club to host Men's Futures Event, Sacramento Capitals Men's Open & NTRP tournament
The Auburn Racquet and Fitness Club will host a $10,000 Men's Futures Pro Circuit Event from June 13-19 in Auburn.
"This is a great way for players to test the waters for the pro circuit," said tournament director, Monty Basnyat, who pointed out that 2004 Caps MVP Dmitry Tursunov used this event as a springboard to his success three years ago. More
Sac State to begin play at NCAAs
The Sacramento State women's tennis team, which earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big Sky Conference title for the fourth consecutive year, will visit BYU in a regional first-round match on May 13. The Hornets (23-4), ranked No. 36, have won their last eight matches and 20 of their last 21. No. 21 BYU is 21-3.
Schnack Attack
Yasmin Schnack, a 17-year-old rising star from Florida who recently moved to Sacramento, is ranked No. 12 in the National Girls 18s and No. 36 in the International Tennis Federation juniors. She defeated the No. 1 ranked player in the Girls 18s on her way to capturing the Winter Super Nationals in Phoenix. She is one of four girls selected to the USTA High Performance Team to get the privilege to play at the French Open juniors. More
