Sacramento Capitals Draft Mardy Fish, Serena Williams to Visit

With third pick in the first round of the WTT Marquee Draft, the Sacramento Capitals selected top American Mardy Fish to play for the Sacramento Capitals in the 2011 Season of the WTT Pro League presented by GEICO. Serena Williams of the Washington Kastles will also be playing one match against the Capitals in Sacramento this summer.

Currently ranked 17th in the ATP World Tour rankings, Fish won back-to-back titles in 2010 in Atlanta and Newport, as well as two doubles titles in 2010 and 2009 respectively with Capitals star Mark Knowles. Fish's career is also highlighted with a Silver Medal in the 2002 Beijing Olympics. He has won five singles titles and eight doubles titles on the ATP Tour, and is a six-time U.S. Davis Cup team member.

Serena Williams will be playing in the Sacramento area for the first time in her WTT career. The former No. 1 player will come to Citrus Heights with the Washington Kastles, the 2009 WTT Champions. Williams has won 27 career Grand Slam Titles including 13 singles championships, 12 in women's doubles, and two in mixed doubles. Williams won her 4th consecutive and 12th overall Grand Slam doubles title at the 2010 French Open with her sister and Kastles' teammate Venus Williams. She won her 13th Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon in 2010 but has been out recently due to a foot injury. Williams is expected to return to the court this spring.

McEvoy said the team is in negotiations to re-sign its roster team from last year which included veteran Mark Knowles, 2010 Grand Slam champion Vania King and doubles standout Dusan Vemic.

The Capitals Come Home to Sunrise Mall

The Capitals are happy to announce that the team is returning to their former home at the Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights beginning this summer. "We are very excited to bring the Capitals back to the Sunrise Mall and the City of Citrus Heights. The Capitals established themselves as a winning franchise here and we have our sights set high for this season," said Matt McEvoy, General Manager.

The Capitals won one of their six WTT World Championships at the Sunrise Mall location in 2002. Christi Woodards, General Manager for the Sunrise Mall said of the return, "The Capitals broke World TeamTennis' attendance records during their previous tenure at Sunrise Marketplace/Sunrise Mall and we hope to make that happen again!" McEvoy said acquiring Fish was one of the team's first steps toward getting the Capitals back in contention for the WTT title.
