SaberCats sign Wagner

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2005) – Arena Football League legend WR/DB BARRY WAGNER has agreed to return to the World Champion San Jose SaberCats for another season, announced General Manager Terry Malley.

Wagner (6-3, 225), who will be playing in his 14th season in the AFL, is a six-time winner of the league's prestigious "Ironman of the Year" award, a two-time league MVP and a seven-time first-team all-league pick.

Entering his sixth season with San Jose after signing a free agent contract prior to the 2000 season, Wagner is the league's all-time leader in scoring (2,376), touchdowns scored (396), rushing touchdowns (119), receiving yards (12,812) and tackles (671.0). In addition, he currently ranks in the top five in 20 SaberCats statistical categories.

The former Alabama A&M star has played in all 86 games (regular and postseason) since joining the SaberCats and has missed just four games during his entire AFL career.

The SaberCats also announced the signing of FB/LB Sigmund Platt, who played the last four seasons with the Greensboro Prowlers of arenafootball2.

Platt (6-0, 255) amassed 276 yards on 120 carries during his Prowlers' career to become the franchise's all-time leader.

The SaberCats begin defense of their Arena Football League title at Tampa Bay on Sunday, January 30 and play their 11th home opener on Saturday, February 5 against the Las Vegas Gladiators at HP Pavilion.
