San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 7, 2006) - In a flurry of activity prior to the Arena Football League deadline for team's to sign their own free agents, the 2006 Western Division Champion San Jose SaberCats inked seven players, including team MVP WR/LB James Roe and leading rusher FB/LB Phil Glover, the club announced.
Along with Roe and Glover, the SaberCats also penned OL/DL Joe Jacobs, DS Clevan Thomas, OL/DL George Williams, FB/LB Brian Johnson and WR/DB Rodney Wright.
"These signings help us keep our core group of players together," stated head coach Darren Arbet. "That group has brought this franchise two championships and a lot of wins over the past several seasons."
Roe (6-1, 198, Norfolk St.) has spent his entire 7-year AFL career with San Jose and is the team's career leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions. In addition he is a three-time AFL All-Ironman Team selection.
In his first season with the club in 2006, Glover (6-0, 272, Utah) rushed for a league-best 15 touchdowns and totaled 156 yards on a team record 55 attempts last season while playing all 16 games.
A second-team All-AFL selection last season, Thomas (5-10, 199, Florida St.) played every defensive down in 2006 and led the team with seven interceptions.
Both Jacobs (6-3, 272, Utah St.) and Williams (6-4, 329, North Carolina St.) have been anchors on the team's line for the past several seasons. Jacobs, an 11-year veteran, had one of his finest seasons in 2006 posting a team-high 4.0 sacks while leading all linemen with 16.0 tackles. Williams participated in just four games before sustaining a season-ending injury in Week 7.
Johnson (6-3, 260, New Mexico) had a breakout season in 2006. The former lineman ran for 115 yards and 12 touchdowns on 48 carries and set a team season record for receptions by a fullback with 11. However, the three-year veteran sustained a knee injury in San Jose's conference championship game loss to Chicago.
After a standout rookie campaign in 2005, Wright (5-9, 181, Fresno St.) played in just two games last season after sustaining a variety of injuries which limited his playing time.
The club also announced it has released 15-year veteran WR/DB Barry Wagner, OL/DL Chuck Reed, QB Stoney Case and DS Terrance Joseph.
