OVERVIEW: The SaberCats advanced to Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII New Orleans with an 81-55 defeat of the Grand Rapids Rampage in the American Conference Championship game on July 12 and will play in their second straight AFL title game and the fourth in the last seven seasons when they tangle with the Philadelphia Soul on Sunday, July 27 in the New Orleans Arena. ABC will televise the game live and in HD at 12 noon (PT). San Jose's flagship radio station KNBR 1050 will also broadcast live and air an extended 2-hour pre game show starting at 9:30 a.m. from the Crescent City. The SaberCats look to become the first repeat AFL champion since the Tampa Bay Storm won back-to-back titles in 1995 and 1996 and they are the first defending champions to reach an ArenaBowl since the 1999 Orlando Predators. San Jose intercepted a team playoff record 5 passes against the Rampage with Omarr Smith tying an AFL record with 3 picks and Mark Grieb tossed 8 TD passes to lead the SaberCats, who posted the second-highest scoring total in an AFL playoff game. San Jose and Philadelphia are the first 10+ regular season win teams to meet in the title game since 2005.
