March 3, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
San Jose SaberCats News Release
The San Jose SaberCats look to remain undefeated on the 2004 season when they travel to New York to battle former head coach Todd Shell in a featured NBC game this Sunday, March 7. Game time from Nassau Coliseum is 9:00 a.m. (PT).
Shell was the SaberCats original coach, joining the squad for the team's inaugural season of 1995. He directed San Jose to a 29-25 regular season record in his four years and won the Western Division title in 1995. The club also qualified for postseason play in three of his four seasons, but never won a playoff game.
The former San Francisco 49ers linebacker (1984-87) will be coaching against his former team for the first time since leaving the San Jose organization following the 1998 AFL season. Shell returned to the sidelines last season, taking over the Dragons following an 0-4 start. He led the New York squad to an 8-4 record the remainder of the season and qualified for the playoffs, where he posted his first playoff win with a 48-45 win over Chicago and was named the AFL's Coach of the Year.
