SaberCats Add a Third QB to Camp Roster

SAN JOSE, Calif. (January 22, 2003) - Walnut Creek resident and former Los Medanos College and University of Pittsburgh quarterback Johnny Turman inked a three-year deal to play with the World Champion San Jose SaberCats, announced General Manager Terry Malley.

Turman (6-4, 220) shared the starting duties for two seasons at Pittsburgh and completed 211-of-406 passes for 3,290 yards and 28 touchdowns during his career.

As a senior in 2000, Turman led the Panthers to a victory over Penn State and had his best game of the season in a win over Boston College. The former Las Lomas High School star threw for 332 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-26 win over the Eagles.

A two-year starter at Los Medanos, Turman enjoyed a standout junior college career. He earned JC All-America honors and was the fourth-ranked quarterback in the country by SuperPrep after throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns. In 1997 he was named the Mid-Empire Conference Most Valuable Offensive Player and led his squad to the conference championship game.

The SaberCats begin defense of their World Championship when they travel to Arizona for an ArenaBowl XVI re-match with the Rattlers on February 2. The game will be regionally televised by NBC.

San Jose plays its first home game against former quarterback and ArenaBowl XVI MVP John Dutton and the expansion Colorado Crush on February 22.
