San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have acquired fullback Johnie Kirton in a trade with the Arizona Rattlers in exchange for wide receiver Jason Geathers and future considerations. The addition of Kirton comes one day after fullback Tommy Taggart was placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.
"Johnie brings with him versatility and quality experience in this league," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "We are looking forward to his arrival and feel that he can help our football team."
Kirton (6-3, 290, Washington) had appeared in two games with the Rattlers this season, including last Saturday's game against the SaberCats. He made 18 appearances in 2011 with the Chicago Rush and led the team on the ground, carrying the ball 114 times for 366 yards and 14 touchdowns. Additionally, he caught six passes out of the backfield for 45 yards and two more scores, as well as 18.5 tackles and a forced fumble on the other side of the ball as a linebacker and on special teams. Kirton began his Arena Football career with Arizona in 2010, and as a rookie carried the ball 20 times for 64 yards and three scores.
The Everett, Wash. native attended the University of Washington, where he appeared in 48 games over his four year playing career, following a redshirt season in 2004. Kirton spent the majority of his collegiate career at tight end, where he caught 28 passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns. As a senior, he moved to the defensive line and recorded 27 tackles and forced a fumble.
