Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) -- After two scoreless periods, the Mississippi RiverKings erupted for a four-goal final period and a 4-0 shutout of the Rapid City Rush at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven on Saturday night.
Matt Pierce scored the game-winning goal and added an assist, as Matt Summers added a goal and an assist in the victory. They helped support the 26-save shutout performance of goaltender Kevin Beech, who posted his third shutout of the season.
Pierce's 10th goal of the season came at the 3:16 mark of the third period, assisted by Summers and Jeff Nelson. Bobby Chaumont followed with his team-leading 24th goal of the year at 7:31 of the frame for a 2-0 lead. Adam Smyth deflected a centering play at 14:47 for the RiverKings' third goal, followed by Summers with the final goal at 16:01.
Neither team scored on the power play. Mississippi outshot the Rush by a 45-26 margin, with losing goaltender Miguel Beaudry making 41 saves.
Mississippi stays three points behind Northeast Division front-runners Oklahoma City and Bossier-Shreveport in the standings after Saturday's action.
While the RiverKings were shutting out the Rush, fans in the first intermission took part in an attempt to put themselves in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest mass duck call. The 3,551 in attendance blew duck calls for three straight minutes in the effort that will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for consideration as a world record.
The RiverKings host Wichita on Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center, starting at 7:05 PM. For more ticket information, contact the RiverKings at 662-342-1755.
