Edmonton Rush News Release
Edmonton, AB-- The Edmonton Rush selected five players in the 2010 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft which took place last night in Toronto.
Two of the players chosen by the Rush were from the Whitby Warriors, the Ontario Junior 'A' League club that is coached by Rush General Manager/Head Coach Derek Keenan. The Rush's first pick was Warriors captain and transition standout John Lafontaine taken in the third round, 28th overall. Considered one of the elite overall athletes in the draft by Inside Lacrosse, the six-foot-two, 190-pounder is a former member of Team Canada's silver-medal winning entry at the World Under-19 tournament and should be a nice fit into the Rush's up-tempo game.
Lafontaine notched seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 22 regular-season games and then chipped in one goal and three assists for four points in the Warriors' playoff run.
With the very next pick - 29th overall - the Rush chose Alexander Kedoh Hill from the OLA's Six Nations Arrows. Hill was the Arrows' top offensive threat this past summer, leading the team and finishing fourth in the league in scoring with 42 goals and 51 assists for 93 points in 21 regular-season games. The six-foot, 145-pounder added eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points during the OLA playoffs. Hill was nominated for the Inside Lacrosse Junior Player of the Year award for 2010.
The Rush went back to the Whitby roster for their next pick, taking Cameron Holding in the fourth round, 38th overall. Holding, a transition player with a highly regarded outside shot, racked up 15 goals and 22 assists in 37 regular-season games plus two goals in eight playoff games. The six-foot-one, 175-pounder was a dynamic player during the NCAA outdoor season as well as he led Florida Southern College with 44 goals in 13 games.
In the fifth round, the Rush found a unique pick in Jarrett Toll and grabbed him in the 48th overall spot. Toll will skate with the University of Alberta Golden Bears this season but has garnered permission from the CIS hockey team to try his hand in the pro lacrosse ranks as well. The five-foot-11, 195-pounder is regarded as a solid defender and strong leader, and the Maple Ridge, B.C., native picked up 10 points in 16 regular-season games for the New Westminster Salmonbellies in the B.C. Junior 'A' League.
Ten picks later, the Rush made their final selection in the sixth round with the choice of Toll's New Westminster teammate Eric Lewthwaite, a six-foot-two, 190-pounder.
The Rush open the 2011 National Lacrosse League season on January 8 against cross-Canada rival and five-time league-champion Toronto Rock. The Rush will make their Rexall Place debut for the 2011 season on January 28 when they play the first of four games against the arch-rival Calgary Roughnecks.
