March 14, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Edmonton Rush News Release
Alberta may have one of the highest rates of MS in the world, but what is it really like to live with this debilitating and unpredictable disease? On Thursday March 15 at Edmonton City Centre Mall East, people will have a chance to find out by participating in The MS Challenge. Through a series of interactive games and activities, anyone can experience first-hand the challenge of living with what is sometimes referred to as "Alberta's disease."
"MS is a confusing and mysterious disease, so if we can let people see a glimpse of what it's really like, they might better understand the daily challenges that people face who live with MS," said Darrel Gregory, Communications Director with the MS Society's Alberta Division.
Joining the MS Society for The MS Challenge will be members of the Edmonton Rush lacrosse team and the cheerleading squad, the Edmonton Crush.
"The Rush challenge hard every game on the floor against the opposition and we are taking that challenge against the disease of MS" states Gord Sawyer, President with the Edmonton Rush.
Everyone who participates in The MS Challenge will be entered to win a prize package from the Edmonton Rush, which includes: Two. There will also be giveaways throughout the Challenge.
About MS
Over 11,000 Albertans live with multiple sclerosis. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40. Women are three times more likely than men to be diagnosed with MS. Canada is a world leader in MS research. In particular, Alberta researchers are making significant gains into the treatment and cure of MS. MS is a disease affecting the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It destroys the protective covering of the nerve fibers, and sometimes the nerve fibers themselves, preventing signals from being transmitted from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.
