Running with the Bulls: Subban Named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week

Belleville Bulls News Release

Two years ago he was an eleventh round draft pick, this week he's being recognized as the CHL's best. Sixteen year-old goaltender Malcolm Subban is coming off two outstanding starts in wins over Oshawa and Brampton last week, and has been named the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week.

"If you had told me in training camp that I'd be getting this award I would have been pretty surprised," said Subban with a smile following practice on Tuesday afternoon. The younger brother of well-known Montreal Canadiens blueliner and former Bull P.K. Subban is known for his calm, relaxed approach to the game. "Malcolm has a different mental makeup as compared to a lot of netminders," commented Bulls goaltending coach Sebastien Farrese. "On gamedays, he's very casual, and likes to have fun with his teammates. He's focused, but he doesn't get too wound up before a start, he simply goes out there and plays with confidence."

Farrese notes that Subban somewhat resembles ex-Bulls netminder Kevin Lalande in his technical approach. "Malcolm anticipates and reads the play tremendously and I think that's been a big factor in him recieving this award. He hasn't had the opportunity to play much at home this season, and the two wins last week at the Yardmen were huge for him."

Belleville knocked off a strong Oshawa Generals squad 6-1 on Wednesday night as Subban came up with 31 saves. On Saturday with the Brampton Battalion in town, Subban was stellar again, making 39 saves in a 2-1 shootout win.

"I've had a great time so far in Belleville," adds Subban. "To go from wondering if I'd even have a spot on this team to feeling more comfortable against OHL calibre shooters is a great feeling. I realize that this is a big award, but more importantly I want to keep my head underwater and work even harder, I'm only 16 and this is just the beginning of my career."

Subban has compiled a 5-5-0-1 record this season in 12 contests. His 2.69 goals-against average and .915 save percentage rank sixth among OHL goaltenders.

"I told Malcolm back in training camp that it doesn't matter what round you're drafted, all you can do is work hard and earn your spot, and he's certainly done that," Farrese concluded.

Subban is the youngest goaltender in the CHL this season to receive the award, and won't be draft eligible until 2012 due to his late 1993 birthday coming up a week today on December 21st.

Subban and the Bulls hit the ice again on Friday night in Kingston when they look for their first win of the season against the rival Frontenacs. Saturday night the Plymouth Whalers visit the Yardmen in the Bulls' final game before the Christmas break.
