Topeka Pilots News Release
The Topeka RoadRunners fended off a furious attack from Rio Grande Valley, posting a 4-2 win on Saturday night to complete the weekend sweep.
The first 20 minutes were dominated by the Killer Bees. They outshot Topeka 9-0 to begin the period, and took a 1-0 lead at 4:59 on a Dallas Gerads goal. The 'Runners didn't manage a single shot on goal until midway through the period. Topeka tied the game at 1-1 when Will Scherer ripped a high shot from the blue line on the power play at 18:33, and despite being outshot 11-5, the 'Runners were even at the end of one period.
In the second period, the momentum shifted Topeka's way. They outshot the Bees 13-6, and took a 2-1 lead on a shorthanded tally by Cam Strong at 1:47. Rio Grande Valley caught a break on a turnover and a lucky bounce at 10:11 to tie it back up, but the 'Runners kept their foot on the gas, as Sly Sutter rifled home a power play goal at 13:03, and Cam Strong tallied again at 15:47 after a gorgeous effort by Jasen Fernsler. Topeka led 4-2 at the end of 2, and rode it all the way to the finish line to complete the weekend sweep.
Topeka (13-2-1) will continue the road trip when they visit Amarillo (5-6-2) next weekend. Topeka returns home to face the Springfield Jr. Blues on Nov.21 and 22.
