'Runners Fall to Springfield Saturday

Goalkeeper Niko Della Maggiore registered the shutout as the Springfield Junior Blues took a 3-0 North American Hockey League victory over the Topeka RoadRunners Saturday night at the Nelson Center.

The win gave the Junior Blues a split of the two-game series. Springfield (16-9-4) enters the holiday break with 36 points, good for third place in the NAHL Midwest Division. The Junior Blues are five points behind the second-place Minnesota Wilderness.

Maggiore earned his second shutout of the season Saturday, when Springfield outshot Topeka 47-29. The RoadRunners were 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Junior Blues were 1-for-3.

Springfield came out aggressively in the first period, outshooting Topeka 21-8 and grabbing a 2-0 lead.

Matt Long's power-play goal, assisted by Kyle Meeh and Brennan Blaszczak, made it 1-0 Junior Blues at 11 minutes 45 seconds into the game, and Coale Norris made it 2-0 less than a minute later. Drew Richter assisted on Norris' goal.

Hunter Schneider, assisted by Brady Tomlak and Jeff Skinner, got the Junior Blues' final goal at 5:09 into the second period.

With seven goals and 15 assists, Tomlak's 22 points are second on the team behind Trevor Stone's 25.

Following the Christmas break, the Junior Blues will visit the Minnesota Magicians for a two-game series Jan. 2-3. Springfield's next home game will be at 7:05 Tuesday, Jan. 5 against the Janesville Jets.
