Abilene Ruff Riders News Release

ABILENE, TX. :

The Abilene Ruff Riders (4-3) defeated the Corpus Christi Hammerheads (2-5) on Saturday, May 16 from the Taylor County Expo Center. The Ruff Riders entered the ball game on a two-game losing streak as the Hammerheads were coming off a big road win over the Odessa Roughnecks back on May 9. Corpus struck first in the contest as QB Cory Miles found WR Schuyler Anderson for a 22-yard touchdown pass to give the Hammerheads a 6-0 lead, this all coming after a Ruff Riders fumble on offense.

Abilene countered on the ensuing drive as QB Quincy Carter drove the Ruff Riders down the field and capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to WR Fred Howze to tie the game at six. After the Ruff Riders defense forced a missed Corpus field goal attempt, Quincy Carter hooked up with WR Mike Carrillo for a 15-yard touchdown reception to give Abilene a 13-6 lead.

Abilene's defense made another key stop as DB Joey Longoria forced WR Nathaniel Dunn to fumble the ball which was recovered by DB Dwayne Robertson at the Abilene 24 yard line. Carter would then find Carrillo again this time for a 17-yard touchdown pass to expand the Ruff Riders lead at 19-6. Corpus was able to rebound in the second quarter by registering 17 points both on offense and defense. Corpus regained the lead after a Quincy Carter fumble was returned by Hammerheads DL Chris Williams for a touchdown. The Hammerheads led 23-22 at halftime.

The Ruff Riders took things over in the second half thanks in part to the strong performance of Quincy Carter. Abilene outscored Corpus Christi, 26-14, in the second half. The Abilene defense played a big role in the half by making three stops and collecting one interception from DB Joey Longoria (8th of season). Quincy Carter registered four total touchdowns in the second half finishing the game with six total.

This week the Ruff Riders host Lone Star Divisional leader El Paso (5-1) on Saturday, May 23. The game has been set as the Indoor Football League Game of the Week as kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the Taylor County Expo Center.
