Rudy Owens named to Topps All-Star Team

Former Hillcat Rudy Owens has been named to the 2009 Topps Class A All-Star team. Owens played a critical role in the Hillcats 2009 Carolina League Championship. The left-hander posted a combined record of 11-2 with a 2.10 ERA between West Virginia and Lynchburg this past season.
The Topps Company of New York, N.Y., in conjunction with Minor League Baseball, honors best performances in all of Minor League Baseball annually. This year the team consists of eight position players, a designated hitter and one pitcher. Owens, who was promoted to Lynchburg in the second half of the season, was the lone pitcher selected in all of Class A baseball.
The southpaw had already been named the Pirates minor league Pitcher-of-the-Year. During his time with Low-A West Virginia he went 10-1 with 1.70 ERA, and as a result was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year and was a mid- and post-season all-star selection in the league. Baseball America named him the best pitching prospect, with the best control and the best change-up in the SALLY. In the post-season he went 1-0 with a 1.92 ERA in two starts for the Hillcats.
