Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings bounced back after an overtime loss to face the Augusta Lynx in the third and final game of the series. Despite an electrifying second period by the S-Kings, the Lynx grabbed the 3-1 win.
Victoria out shot Augusta 12-6 in the first frame, but goaltenders Mike Wall and BJ Boxma kept it scoreless. The second period gathered momentum after Nate Forster rang a shot off the post. Battles in both ends of the ice led to a goal from Anthony Battaglia, who poked in a rebound and barely slipped it past Boxma.
A little over three minutes later, Victoria native Mike Josephson cut down the Wall and scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway feed from Pat Sutton. The game was tied 1-1 until Martin Lapointe found Sam Ftorek perched next to the crease, and the Lynx capitalized on the power play with 6:29 left in the second.
The Salmon Kings charged the net nearing the end of the second, but the sprawling Wall defended the mesh. Despite out shooting Augusta 21-14 after the second frame, Victoria head into the third down 2-1.
Ryan Wade and Seth Leonard sparked opportunities for the S-Kings in the neutral zone fight that was the third period, but the only goal in the final stanza was an empty netter by Augusta's Joel Stepp with 43 seconds remaining.
Wall earned his second straight victory over Victoria and his seventh âW' of the season, and Boxma suffered his eighth loss. The Salmon Kings out shot the Lynx 31-19. Victoria was 0 for 5 in the power play, and Augusta scored once in the two chances with the man advantage.
The Salmon Kings will get a visit from the National Conference fifth-ranked Long Beach Ice Dogs for a three game series starting Wednesday, February 8th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The puck drops at 7:05 pm.
