Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Victoria Royals forward Tyler Soy has been named WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending February 11, 2018.
Soy, who was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the seventh round, 205th overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft, recorded eight points (4G-4A) and a plus-one rating in three games as the Royals moved back into a familiar spot as the top team in the B.C. Division.
Wednesday against the Portland Winterhawks, Soy recorded a hat trick with three even-strength goals in an 8-5 loss to become the all-time leading goal scorer for the Royals' franchise. Earning second star honours in the contest, Soy was named the WHL's first star of the night.
Two nights later, Soy recorded a goal and four points as the Royals defeated the Kelowna Rockets by a 6-1 final at home. For his efforts, he earned the first star of the game and second star of the night honours in the WHL.
In Saturday's weekend finale for the Royals, Soy had an assist as Victoria completed the weekend sweep over Kelowna with a 4-3 overtime victory. Soy's assist was an important one, coming on the game-winning goal by teammate Tanner Kaspick.
With 12 points (5G-7A) in his last five games, Soy has continued to spark the Royals offensively and has 73 points (28G-45A) in 52 games, scoring at a pace of 1.40 points per game. He also has 10 power-play goals, three short-handed goals and three game-winning goals. Wednesday's hat trick was the sixth of his WHL career and first of the 2017-18 season.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound overage forward from Cloverdale, B.C. was originally selected in the first round, eighth overall, by the Royals in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Since then, he's played in 309 career WHL games, registering 308 points (143G-165A). Of his 143 career goals, 39 have come on the power play, 14 have come while shorthanded and 23 have counted as game-winners.
This week mark's Soy's second victory of the weekly award, having won the honours in October 2017.
The Royals are in action next on Family Day in British Columbia, Monday, February 12 (2:05 p.m. PST) as the Royals head into the Okanagan for their third straight contest against the Kelowna Rockets.
