Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
Baseball America reported that the Kansas City Royals have signed two players, left-hander Dan Cevette and outfielder Steven Boggs to minor league contracts.
Cevette (pronounced "Sah-VEET"), a 25-year old Elkland, PA resident, is a candidate to see time with the Naturals during the upcoming season. He pitched last season for the Kinston Indians, the Cleveland Indians' affiliate in the Class-A Advanced Carolina League. Cevette posted a 3-1 record in 17 games, fanning 31 hitters in 19 innings. His 7.11 ERA was inflated by a June 30th appearance against the Potomac Nationals where he allowed seven runs while recording just two outs.
Shoulder and arm troubles led to two separate stints on the disabled list for Cevette during the course of the 2008 season and he voluntarily retired. However, after a successful January workout in front of scouts and several teams, he inked a contract with the Royals as a six-year minor league free agent. In 96 career minor league games (68 starts), he is 19-19 with a 3.79 ERA. Cevette was originally a 3rd round selection of the Indians in the 2002 draft.
Boggs, a 24-year old San Diego, CA resident is likely to draw an assignment to one of the Royals' Class-A clubs. He was originally signed by the Colorado Rockies out of San Diego State University in 2004. He spent three seasons with the Rockies, advancing to the Short-Season-A level Northwest League before being released.
In 2007, Boggs joined the Chico Outlaws of the independent Golden Baseball League and was a key cog in their championship season, improving greatly at the plate in addition to being one of the best defensive outfielders in the league. Following the season his contract was purchased by the Chicago White Sox, who did not have a spot for him with one of their minor league clubs in 2008. He returned to Chico and hit .296 with 27 stolen bases and 73 runs scored in 86 games.
The Northwest Arkansas Naturals are the Double-A Texas League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and will open the home portion of their 2009 season on Thursday, April 16th against the San Antonio Missions. For season ticket packages please call (479) 927-4900 or visit nwanaturals.com.
