Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Chad Allan. A twelfth year pro from Davidson, Saskatchewan, Allan (6'1"/205 lbs.), who turns 31 today, split last season between the Bietigheim-Bissingen Steelers of the German 2.Bundesliga and the Vienna Capitals of the Austrian Hockey League, picking up a total of 11 assists and 60 penalty minutes in 45 games. Coming into this season, Allan has played 624 regular season pro games, primarily in the AHL and Europe, scoring 40 career goals, assisting on 128 others, and racking up 793 total penalty minutes.
Allan, a third round pick (#65 overall) of the Vancouver Canucks in 1994, played five seasons of major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades, scoring 30 goals, assisting on 85 others, and racking up 393 penalty minutes in 260 WHL regular season games. During his junior career, Allan was twice a member of Team Canada's entry in the World Junior Championships (1995 and 1996), each time taking home the gold medal. The 1995 Team Canada WJC gold medal championship squad included, among many future pro stars, Larry Courville, who last season became the first Royal ever inducted into the Reading Eagle Wall of Honor. In fact, Allan launched his pro career with the Syracuse Crunch, where he and Courville were teammates for parts of three seasons. Overall, Allan played four seasons with Syracuse and currently ranks fourth in all-time games played for the Crunch (282) and tied for seventh in all-time penalty minutes (402). Allan played his fifth season of AHL hockey with the St. John's Maple Leafs in 2000-01, where he scored four goals, assisted on five others and picked up 50 penalty minutes in seventy-three games.
The following season, 2001-02, Allan made his debut in European hockey, leading the then-fledgling Belfast Giants to the British Super League regular season title, as Allan played to a +38 in just forty-eight games. Allan then played two seasons with ERC Ingolstadt in the German Elite League, prior to returning to North America for a short stint with the Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League. After 22 games with the Wings in 2004, Allan returned to Europe where he joined Bietighiem-Bissingen. Allan played with the Steelers until mid-way into last season, when he joined Vienna.
The Royals' home opener is on Saturday, November 3, 2007, against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Royals' full Season Tickets and Total Choice Flex Plans are now on sale.
