Brockton, Mass. - Luis Gonzalez (Concordia) went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored to help guide the Brockton Rox to a 7-0 victory over the Pittsfield Suns on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action.
Brockton improves to 10-11 with the win and moves into fifth place in the FCBL standings. Meanwhile, Pittsfield falls to 11-14 with the loss.
Joe Fasano (New Jersey Institute of Technology) recorded his first win (1-0) of the season to lead the Rox on Saturday. The right-hander scattered five hits in six shutout innings, while walking none and striking out three.
Norton's A.J. Bashaw (New Jersey Institute of Technology) and Sal Minichino (Concordia) combined for three more shutout innings out of the bullpen to keep the Suns off the scoreboard.
The Rox garnered a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run single from Gonzalez, and soon added three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead. After A.J. Lardo (Maryland) sparked the third inning rally with an RBI double that scored Gonzalez, Mike Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) stepped in a ripped a two-run double to increase the lead to five.
Brockton tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth after back-to-back RBI singles from Vito Perna (Southeastern Louisiana) and Gonzalez plated both Tanner Reibenspies (San Diego State) and Mansfield native Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt).
Gonzalez, Lupia, and Lardo combined for nine of Brockton's 11 hits in the win. Lupia finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Lardo went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Joe Gallub (Concordia) also had a productive evening for the Rox, going 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
Anthony Corona (CW Post) finished with a pair of hits to lead the Suns.
Tom Darby (Eastern Connecticut State) was tagged with loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks, while fanning four.
The Rox and Suns meet again at 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, this time at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield.
