St. Cloud Rox News Release
Duluth, Minn. - The St. Cloud Rox made a huge comeback to take their game against the Duluth Huskies into extra innings but could not hold on as they fell 9-8.
St. Cloud took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Conor Keniry (Jr., Wake Forest University) got things going for the Rox hitting a double to center field. Keniry advanced to third on a pass ball and then was brought home by Alex McRae (So., Jacksonville University) as he reached on an error by the Huskies' second baseman.
The Huskies would come back and take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Duluth's fourth run came off a fielder's choice scoring an unearned run.
With two outs on the board in the top of the third for the Rox Carlos Leal (R-Jr., Delta State) earned the walk and then advanced to second on a balk. Adam Martin (Jr., Western Carolina University) also earned a walk to then be advanced to second as Blake Headley (So., University of Nebraska) hit a single and scored Leal making it a 4-2 game.
Duluth would then extend their lead in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead over the Rox off a fielder's choice. In the bottom of the fifth the Huskies would score three more runs to pull away with an 8-2 lead.
Scoring went stagnant until the top of the eighth inning when the Rox came within one run of tying the game up. It was Headley leading off for the Rox hitting a double to right field. Keniry followed hitting a single to right field putting Headley in scoring position. Next up was Dustin Breshears (So., St. John's University) also hitting a single making it a 8-3 game. Tyler Wolfe (Fr., DMACC) reached first and advanced all runners on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Tim Colwell (Jr., North Dakota State Univ.) then earned a walk moving all runners for the Rox to shorten the gap 8-4.
The Rox made it an 8-5 game as Devin Pearson (Fr., University of California) reached on an error by the third baseman moving all runners and scoring Breshears. After a pitching change by the Huskies, Carlos Leal hit a double for the Rox to center field making it an 8-7 game.
St. Cloud would hold Duluth to no runs in the bottom of the eighth and then tie the game up 8-8 in the top of the ninth as McRae grounded out and then Keniry scored off an error by the third baseman.
The Rox were able to hold on and take the game into extra innings but the Huskies earned a run in the bottom of the 10th inning off a Rox error to defeat the Rox 9-8.
The Rox (3-4, 3-4 North) will be back in action on Wednesday, June 5 as they play host to the Alexandria Blue Anchors at Joe Faber Field for a 7:05 p.m. game time.
