August 7, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release
Brockton, Mass. - The Brockton Rox exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning to come from behind to knock off the Seacoast Mavericks, 10-5, at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday night in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action.
With the win, Brockton (29-23) locks up a trip to the 2012 FCBL playoffs as one of the top four teams in the league.
After Casey Cotter (Merrimack) opened the game with a leadoff double, Seacoast (20-31) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Cotter came around to score the first run of the game on an RBI infield single from Kevin Stenhouse (Rhode Island). The Mavericks added two more runs later in the frame on a sacrifice fly from Dionys Quezada (Merrimack) and an RBI single from Luke Fernandes (Boston College) to go up by three.
Brockton scratched a run to pull within two in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single from Luis Gonzalez (Concordia) that scored Norton's Sean Ryan (Wheaton). However, the Mavericks answered back in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs to extend their lead to four. Stenhouse tallied the first run of the inning on another sacrifice fly from Quezada, while Jon Pilla III (Belmont Abbey) followed with an RBI single that scored Anyelo Roman (Dakota State) and made it, 5-2.
The Rox pulled within a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Aaron Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) that plated A.J. Lardo (Maryland). That set the stage for Brockton's offensive barrage in the seventh inning that gave the hosts a five-run lead.
Lardo opened the floodgates with one out in the frame after an RBI triple to right field plated both Gonzalez and East Bridgewater's Greg Baggett (Bentley). Trailing by one, Scituate's Jordan Berry (George Washington) stepped in and belted another two-run triple that scored Lardo and Mike Lupia (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and put the Rox up by one. After Aaron Lupia made it, 7-5, with an RBI single that scored Berry, things really began to unravel for the Mavericks. Seacoast issued three consecutive bases-loaded walks to score Aaron Lupia, Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt), and Tanner Reibenspies (San Diego State), giving Brockton a 10-5 lead.
Craig LeJeune (George Washington) was flawless out of the bullpen for Brockton, as he retired eight straight batters in relief of Rox starter Steve Pike (Stonehill).
Jonathan Rosenberger (Newberry) recorded the win (3-2) in relief, after chalking up three strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings of work, while Sal Minichino (Concordia) and Christian Wolosik (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) combined to work two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.
The Mavericks spoiled a solid start from Mavericks starter Lucas Olen (Southern New Hampshire), who allowed just two unearned runs on five hits and three walks in six innings of work, while racking up seven strikeouts along the way.
Ryan Coppinger (Canisius) was tagged with the loss (0-1) for Seacoast.
Lardo led the charge for Brockton, as he went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Ryan finished 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored, while Aaron Lupia went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Stenhouse led the Mavericks offensively with a pair of hits to go along with an RBI and two runs scored, while Roman went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Rox are back in action at Campanelli Stadium on Thursday night against the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide at 7:05 p.m., while the Mavericks hit the road to face the Raging Tide on Wednesday at noon.
