Roulis, Mertz Earn Week 2 Awards

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Vermont infielder Thomas Roulis (Dartmouth) and Newport right-hander Michael Mertz (Oklahoma State) have been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Week 2 of the 2015 season, the league announced Monday.

Roulis enjoyed an absolutely torrid week at the plate, finishing with a league-high 13 hits in 21 at-bats for a sterling .619 average. He knocked in two doubles and a home run while driving in three and scoring three times, as well. He drew two walks, never struck out, and went 4-for-5 on the bases in five games played.

On the year, the switch-hitting rising senior at Dartmouth has gone 18-for-31 (.581) at the plate and leads the league in batting average by over 140 points. He has also scored six runs, driven in three, and owns a 1.380 OPS.

On the mound, Mertz made two appearances - one start - for the Gulls last week and dazzled, striking out 10 over 10 scoreless innings with only four hits and three walks surrendered. He made his Newport debut out of the bullpen last Monday and contributed four scoreless innings against New Bedford. Then on Saturday, he avenged the team's loss against the Bay Sox by tossing six dominant innings with eight Ks, two walks and two hits surrendered.

Honor Roll

Joven Afenir (Newport/Kansas) - Finished 10-for-16 (.625) and led the league in batting average while adding a double and a league-high seven runs scored in four games.

Brian Christian (Plymouth/Northeastern) - In two appearances, fanned 11 in only 5-1/3 innings with only two walks surrendered while giving up no runs.

Sam Delaplane (Vermont/Eastern Michigan) - Picked up two saves in two dominant relief outings, striking out 10 in five scoreless innings with no hits or walks surrendered.

Cody Dube (Sanford/Keene State) - Fanned 10 in 5-1/3 innings with only one earned run allowed, posting a 1.69 ERA in the process.

Kyle Gauthier (Keene/Hartford) - Dazzled in lone start of the week, totaling seven strikeouts over six scoreless innings while scattering six hits to pick up the victory.

Aaron Hill (Mystic/Connecticut) - Swiped a league-high six stolen bases in six attempts while also adding five hits in 17 at-bats with two runs over five games.

Tim Lynch (Ocean State/Southern Mississippi) - Drove in five runs on six hits and scored six more (2nd/NECBL) while blasting three homers and totaling two more doubles in four games.

Willie Rios (Mystic/Maryland) - Logged a league-high 12 strikeouts in two starts, totaling 9-2/3 innings whiel posting a 0.93 ERA.

Brent Rooker (Plymouth/Mississippi State) - Went 8-for-22 (.364) with six runs, two doubles, two homers and seven RBIs in five games.

Ben Ruta (Mystic/Wagner) - Finished with a .444 average on eight hits in 18 at-bats; also scored three times, drilled three doubles and drove in six.
