June 12, 2008 - Intense Football League (Intense)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release
The Odessa Roughnecks have made significant changes to their coaching staff as of late. Haywood Hill has been named the new defensive coordinator of the Roughnecks as Woodrow Lowe has been named co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. Both are long-time close friends with Head Coach Chris Williams, and they look to improve an Odessa defense that currently ranks 5th in the IFL in 2008.
In 2002, Haywood Hill coached in the AFL with the Toronto Phantoms. The Phantoms had gone 5-9 that season and missed the playoffs. Following his time in the AFL, Hill moved to the AF2 where he spent time coaching with several teams including the Wichita Stealth, Columbus Destroyers, Green Bay Blizzard, and the Tennessee Valley Vipers. Hill also served as defensive coordinator for the Corpus Christi Hammerheads in the first year of the IFL and recently had a short stint with the Alaska Wild in â08, where at one point was named the head coach.
Woodrow Lowe also holds experience from the AF2, as he spent time with the Arkansas Twisters as a D-Line coach. Lowe was also a member of the coaching staff for the Birmingham Bolts of the XFL in their only year of existence. He was a defensive line coach in the All-American Football League for the Houston club, and spent some time coaching at the University of Alabama.
"I am very excited to have both coaches here in Odessa. We are all very good friends and we have known each other for some time now. It was important to me to bring in guys that I could trust during this final stretch of the regular season. I know that they will bring energy and knowledge to our team." stated Head Coach Chris Williams.
After their bye week, the Roughnecks will face the Fairbanks Grizzlies (2-9) on Saturday, June 21, 2008. Kickoff is set for 7:11 P.M. at Benny Boyd Field from the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa. The newly acquired coaches look to lead the Roughnecks defense as Odessa looks to gain momentum heading towards the post-season.
Season tickets and group tickets continue to move quickly so interested parties should contact the team at (432) 332 - PASS (7277) or visit www.RoughnecksIFL.com for further information.
