West Texas Roughnecks News Release

ODESSA, TX. There is a reason that the term “quarterback” is always used regarding matters of importance, like “Hey Joe, you quarterback the implementation of the new software package.” This role is naturally designed for not only an athlete, but also a true leader.

Roughnecks new quarterback Jason Johnson fills this role well. The team proudly introduced their first-ever starting quarterback this afternoon at sponsor Mean Gene’s Pizza in Odessa. The 6’ 4”, 215 pound scrambler has the perfect size for an NFL quarterback and nearly the talent to match. “We will be very fortunate to have Jason here for any significant amount of time.” stated Head Coach Chris Williams, “His size and talent level are both beyond that of our league and we are blessed to be able to enjoy his services while we can.”

In a one-season junior college career, Johnson demonstrated both a strong arm and great running ability as he averaged over 350 passing yards and over 150 yards rushing, a feat that earned him an All American status. His college playing days continued at Western Kentucky where he set the schools pass efficiency single season record in 2001and earned a spot on the All Ohio Valley Conference Team.

“I am very pleased to be playing for what I believe will be the most successful, and well coached franchise in the IFL.” remarked Johnson. With the season just 24 days away, team practices begin on April 23rd where Coach Williams is faced with the challenges of reducing a roster of 40 players down to the final 23, teaching all of these young men a new play book, and converting many outdoor players (including Jason Johnson) into indoor football players. Williams has 12 days to accomplish this.

The Roughnecks also unveiled their team uniforms today using Johnson as a model. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased by calling the teams offices or visiting any area Albertsons location.
