Roughnecks earn playoff berth, division title
May 23, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release
Odessa, TX. How often can a team announce a division title and a home playoff birth just after the mid-point mark of the season! Basin sports fans will have memories of very few if at all, and only one of the 22 teams in the National Indoor Football League has earned this honor. The undefeated Odessa Roughnecks (9-0) did so in Lubbock on Saturday night with a 59-20 victory over the GunSlingers and with six weeks still left to play in the season. "From players to coaches and staff, we are all starting to realize that we are amidst a season that we will always remember. I hope we are creating the same for our fan base and the entire community.", remarked head coach Chris Williams about the current campaign.
With the Atlantic Conferences top team, the St. Louis based Rage losing a second game over the weekend, only the Everett Hawks present a possible problem with Odessa having a shot at every post-season game being held in Odessa for the Roughnecks. The dates of the four round playoff will be July 9, 16, 23, and 30 with the first already guaranteed at home and a win in that game assuring that the second game will be in Odessa as well. Season ticket holders will be contacted this week about reserving their seats for all four games before they go on sale in early June.
Odessa will host NIFL foes in five of the upcoming six weeks starting this Saturday as they host the San Angelo Stampede at the RoughHouse. Kickoff is at 7:11 PM with the tailgate party beginning at 5:00 PM. The first 1,000 fans will receive a full size football compliments of Copeland Insurance Agency. Tickets continue to sell quickly and are available at any area Albertson's locations, by calling (800) 585-3737, or by visiting www.RoughnecksNIFL.com.
