Roughnecks Control Play But Lose in LA
June 3, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
The early-season frustrations for the Tulsa Roughnecks FC continued Saturday night in Carson, California. The Roughnecks controlled most of the play against the high-scoring LA Galaxy II, but could not find the back of the net. The result was a 1-0 loss that kept the Roughnecks winless and with seven points on the season with a 0-5-7 record.
The frustrating night began early for the Roughnecks. They completely controlled the play in the first 45 minutes, owning nearly 60% of the possession, but they came away trailing.
The only real chance of the half for Los Dos, who came into the match with 20 goals scored in its last 5 outings, produced the game's only goal. In just the sixth minute, off a corner kick, a shot from Miguel Aguilar was blocked near the goal line by TRFC's Josh Morton. The rebound fell right back to Aguilar who blasted a right-footed shot into the net to give Galaxy II the early lead.
From there, it was a case of missed chances for the Roughnecks.
The first opportunity came in the 10th minute when TRFC midfielder Michael Gamble intercepted a back pass and had an open net, but his shot from a difficult angle hit the side of the net.
Just three minutes later, Gamble intercepted again and crossed to an unmarked Joaquin Rivas, but Tulsa's leading goal scorer tapped his effort just wide of the post.
The next chance came in the 26th minute when Rivas set up a wide open Ivan Mirkovic in the middle of the penalty area, but the midfielder's effort sailed well over the crossbar.
The frustrations continued in the final minutes of the half as Morton had a header deflect off the post, and Francisco Ugarte tapped the rebound wide. Later, Paris Gee had a shot saved, and Gamble had an open shot that went wide.
It was more of the same in the second half.
Eti Taveras, who gave the LA backline trouble for much of the night, had a shot inside the box saved by Los Dos keeper Wade Hamilton.
The storyline would continue for the rest of the half with the best chance of the night coming in the 63rd minute. In a quick attack for the Roughnecks, Mirkovic had a close-range shot saved. With the goal open, the rebound found Rivas who had his effort deflected, but it fell to Gee who had a third opportunity to find an equalizer, but his shot was denied on a one-handed save by Hamilton.
Both teams had players sent off in the final quarter hour. Julian Buescher picked up a second yellow for Galaxy II in the 77th minute, and Ugarte was shown a pair of yellows for Tulsa in the final minutes.
In arguable the best outing of the season for TRFC, the final statistics were not indicative of the final score. The Roughnecks owned 61% of the game's possession while holding a 15-9 advantage in total shots. TRFC also had 11 corner kicks compared to only 3 for Los Dos.
The Roughnecks will be back at home for their next match on Saturday, June 9 when they will host Saint Louis FC at ONEOK Field. Kickoff in downtown Tulsa is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
It will be Fabian Cerda Jersey Night with tickets for the match, and any other home match this season, available online, by calling (918) 744-5901 or by visiting the stadium ticket office.
