West Texas Roughnecks News Release
Odessa, Texas. It's hard to imagine that just one year ago from today, the media was informed that the Permian Basin's IFL franchise was beginning. A press release was hand delivered by team ownership to all members of the media with an invitation to a press conference to be held at the Elegante hotel. No name, no logo, no staff, no coach...just a couple of dreamers, a prairie dog, and an idea.
Here we stand one full calendar year later and the story is quite different...except for the prairie dog part. Nearly every game this season drew close to capacity crowds, the team demonstrated great character while finishing 9-7 and even hosting a home playoff game. The community has embraced its newest member and seeing Roughnecks hats and shirts are now commonplace throughout the Basin.
Now, with over seven months before the team's next game, many details that were large projects during year one now behind them, the sky is the limit for the Roughnecks. "We are certain that with a full staff of now experienced sports marketers, a huge renewal effort successfully behind us, and twice the time to do half the projects, that we are in a position to really pack the Rough House every single game in 2005", explained team president Tommy Benizio.
On the field, Coach Chris Williams has just return from Alabama where a family visit doubled as a recruiting trip. He and Coach Keaton were planning for the upcoming months which will include the re-signing of several key players from last season's team, try-out camps in several different major cities, and a hard phone recruiting effort. In relation to 2005, coach remarked, "We are in a great recruiting situation between the 2005 All-Star game using all of our players in front of big time scouts and the success of the IFL, particularly our franchise. Fans can look forward to a team of no less than championship quality next year."
In celebration of this amazing one-year experience for everyone involved, please accept this special "Press-Release" as a thank you for your contributions. We look forward to being part of the IFL and the Permian Basin for many years to come! Members of the team's management and coaching staff will be available for any "one-year" related stories or other topics related to the team.
