Rough Riders Week Ahead

August 4, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release

( Plainview , N.Y. , August 4, 2004) The Long Island Rough Riders (7-9-1) will go on the road to face the Wilmington Hammerheads (9-6-3) on Friday, July 6th and the Charlotte Eagles(13-2-2) on Saturday, July 7th.

Last weekend, the Rough Riders lost 1-0 to league leaders Pittsburgh Riverhounds, dropping their record to 7-9-1. Long Island must win their remaining three games to have a chance of making the playoffs. A loss will eliminate them from playoff contention. The Rough Riders currently trail Harrisburg (7-6-3) by two points for the final playoff spot in the Atlantic division, with Harrisburg still having a game at hand.

Long Island will come into the game without the services of defenders Wilmer Cabrera (hamstring) and Dahir Mohammed (suspension). However, in order for the Rough Riders to advance to the next level they must put goals into the back of the net. They will rely on scorers Derrick Etienne and Giovanni Savarese, who have both been quiet for the past few games.

On Friday night the Rough Riders will travel to Wilmington, a team which they had trouble with earlier this season. Wilmington edged out the Long Islanders 2-1 behind goals from forwards Warren Ukah and Glenn Murray. The Hammerheads come into the game lead by Kenny Bundy, who has accumulated fifteen points this season, and who was named to the PSL team of the week for his recent play.

After a Friday night battle in Wilmington, the Rough Riders will travel further south to meet Southern Division leaders the Charlotte Eagles. Charlotte comes in with a record of 13-2-2, trailing league leader Pittsburgh by five points. The Eagles are lead by the forward tandem of Jacob Coggins and Dustin Swinehart. Coggins is currently the league leading scorer with fifteen tallies and Swinehart ranks tied for ninth with nine goals this season.

Both Wilmington and Charlotte have already clinched playoff spots.

The Rough Riders final regular season game will take place against the Western Mass Pioneers on August 14, 2004 in Ludlow, MA. The Rough Riders have split the season series thus far with the Pioneers, but took the last game by a score of 3-2.
