Rough Riders Week Ahead
July 14, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview , N.Y. , July 14, 2004) The Long Island Rough Riders will face their division rivals the Harrisburg City Islanders on Saturday, July 17th at 7:30pm. The game will take place at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. The Rough Riders (5-8-1) currently trail the Islanders by five points for the final playoff spot in the Atlantic division. The last time the two teams met Harrisburg (6-4-3) was able to outmatch an undermanned Rough Riders team by a 3-0 margin.
Since the last time these teams met the Rough Riders have signed a few new faces. The club has added Wilmer Cabrera and Paul Caffrey to the backline, Jim Rooney and Carlo Espinosa to the midfield and Giovanni Savarese upfront. The Rough Riders come in having won four of their last five PSL games. Harrisburg on the other hand comes off a 2-2 tie with the South Jersey Barons of the PDL.
The Rough Riders dropped a heart breaking 2-1 game to the MetroStars last night, with the lone Rough Riders goal coming from Sean Higgins. Higgins was nearly able to tie up the score, but his shot in the eighty-seventh minute was tipped wide by MetroStars keeper Zach Wells.
The Rough Riders are lead by goal scorer Derrick Etienne and newcomer Carlo Espinosa. Etienne currently ranks first on the Rough Riders in goals scored with ten, and has caught fire, scoring four goals in his last two games since being matched up with returnee Giovanni Savarese. Espinosa has helped to bring new life to a once struggling team. With his quick feet and arsenal of moves Carlo has become a dangerous weapon on the right side of midfield.
The Harrisburg City Islanders have made a new addition to their lineup in the hopes of sealing a playoff spot. The Islanders have added former MLS first round pick Aleksey Korol. Korol was drafted fifth overall by the Dallas Burn in the 2000 MLS Super Draft. The Islanders' attack is guided by rookie Steve Fisher. Fisher has accumulated three goals and four assists in twelve games, and currently ranks tied for seventeenth among the entire PSL for points in the season.
After hosting Harrisburg, the Rough Riders next face New Hampshire Phantoms at home on July 24, 2004 at 7:30. The Rough Riders have split the season series thus far with the Phantoms, but took the last game by a score of 2-1.
