Rough Riders Week Ahead
July 6, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview, NY, July 6, 2004) - The Long Island Rough Riders will face the Jersey Falcons twice this week. On Wednesday, they will host the team from the Premier Development League at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. This "Camp Day" game, which is the Rough Riders only day-game of the season, will kick-off at 12noon. Team sponsor "Vytra Health Care" will be giving out free sun-screen samples to the first 1,000 people through the gates. On Sunday, the Rough Riders will play the Falcons on their home field at Roselle Catholic High School in Roselle, NJ at 5:00 pm.
The Rough Riders (3-8-1) fought two tough road battles this past weekend. On Saturday, Long Island defeated the Western Mass Pioneers 3-2 to win their second game in a row. July 4th saw an end to the short winning streak, as Long Island fell to the Westchester Flames 2-1.
The Rough Riders have made some significant additions to the team in the past few weeks. Along with defender Wilmer Cabrera, who signed three weeks ago, midfielders Jim Rooney and Carlo Espinosa, forward Giovanni Savarese and defender Paul Caffrey (Assistant Coach) are now part of the team. Forward Shaun Higgins is also back after three weeks on the bench due to an ankle sprain.
In related roster news, the Rough Riders have released players Pedro Fragoso, Robert Brennan and Joe Ragusa because of personal commitments.
The Rough Riders' match on Wednesday against the Jersey Falcons will be the second match against a Premier Development Team. They won their first PDL contest on May 22nd against the New Jersey Stallions 1-0. The Falcons are currently ranked 9th in the Northeast Division of the PDL with a record of 1-11-0 and 2 points. All PSL teams are required to have a minimum number of PDL games scheduled, and the results are surprising. So far this season, only 21 out of 49 PSL-PDL matches were won by the higher division PSL teams.
Tickets for our "Camp Day" game are available at $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 5-12. Children younger than 5 years are free! For more team or ticket information, please call our team office at (516)671-1585 or check out our website at www.liroughriders.com.
