Rough Riders Week Ahead
May 19, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview, N.Y., Wednesday, March 19, 2004) â The Long Island Rough Riders return home to host the New Jersey Stallions this Saturday, May 22. Kick-off at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
After a difficult start to the 2004 season, Long Island is still seeking it's first victory. Last weekend the Rough Riders lost in Westchester 4-1. The weekend before saw a 4-2 loss at the New Hampshire Phantoms.
Midfielders Mike Butler and Christopher Giuffrida were released at the beginning of the week. General Manager Jim Kilmeade stated: "We needed to make some changes in the team. That process has begun." Looking towards the future he added: "We are presently evaluating a few high-level players and decisions on these individuals will be forthcoming."
Goalkeeper Tobi Fuchs described the team's mood this way: "After the last loss every man realized that we have to fight harder and help each other more on the field. We can only go through this as a team. We will get through this challenging time and come out of it as a stronger unit."
The current 0W-3L-1T record also reflects the injury-plagued defense: Carlyle Myrie has yet to play one match this season. Starters Rich Bradley, Steve Cadet and Darrell Etienne suffered injuries last Saturday and are questionable for the upcoming match.
New Jersey's record is 0W-3L-1T. Forward Arda Altincatal is the most successful scorer, having scored two of the team's three goals this season.
