Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview, N.Y., April 28, 2004) The Long Island Rough Riders will host their second match of the season this Saturday, May 1, against the Western Mass Pioneers at Mitchel Field in Uniondale. Last Saturday saw a thrilling 1-1 tie against the Westchester Flames, with Rough Riders Moussa Sy securing the tie late in the injury time. The first four games of the season also count towards qualifying for the prestigious Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Last season, the Western Mass Pioneers demonstrated their strength against the Rough Riders in a 2-2 tie at home. In their home game, the Rough Riders were able to beat the team from Springfield, MA, 2-0. Long Island finished last season 13-4-3 for 42 points and won the Atlantic Region, the Pioneers were 8-11-1.
Two important additions can change the picture for Western Mass this season: Leszek Wrona, who led them to the PSL Championship in 1999, returns as head coach of the Pioneers. Former Rough Rider Fausto Klinger is expected to solidify the Pioneers' midfield. Returning forward Rob Jachym was the PSL MVP last season, leading the league with 14 goals.
The Rough Riders will look for scoring from forwards Shaun Higgins and Moussa Sy.
Said Rough Riders coach Ronan Wiseman: "The season opener was a good start for us, especially considering we have a new coaching staff and made several changes to our lineup. We expect this to be a tough game. Western Mass is a very good team. It will be a tough test for us on Saturday."
