Rough Riders to Host MetroStars

July 8, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release

(Plainview, NY, Tuesday, July 8, 2004 ) The Long Island Rough Riders will host the MetroStars in “The Battle For New York”, an exhibition game at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale on Tuesday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The last time the two teams met was on July 11th, 2000, when the MetroStars registered a 4-2 victory. But momentum may be in the Rough Riders favor. They come into the game on a hot streak winning 3 of their last 4 games, to improve their record to 4-8-1 while the MetroStars have lost their last 3 games dropping them to 5-6-4.

The Rough Riders are lead by recent returnees Giovanni Savarese and Jim Rooney, both also former MetroStars players. Savarese is the all- time leading goal scorer in a season for the Rough Riders with thirty-three goals, as well as the all time leading goal scorer in MetroStars history with forty-four goals. Rooney was a cornerstone on the Rough Riders Championship Team in 1995 and has become the midfield “general” as the Riders have started to step up their play.

The MetroStars come into the game lead by midfielder Amado Guevara (5G, 6A) and seventeen- year- old forward Eddie Gaven (4G, 5A). Gaven helped guide the U.S. U-17 National Team to a quarterfinal berth in the prestigious U-17 World Championships in 2003. Unfortunately for the MetroStars, they will be without newcomer Pablo Brenes who was called to the Costa Rican Olympic team in preparation for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

“Our team is looking forward to a good competitive match, and re-establishing our links with the MetroStars”, noted Rough Riders Head Coach Ronan Wiseman. “Although this is a friendly match, we are still going out there looking for a favorable result, and ultimately use our momentum to springboard us forward to the next level.”

“This is a great way to showcase the best soccer in the country to the Long Island community”, stated MetroStars president and GM Nick Sakiewicz. “The MetroStars see this as a way for the team to meet a quality opponent in an exhibition match during the regular season. We hope to use this match as preparation for a successful postseason run.”

§ Chris Armas will be flying in from Chicago for his Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony. Chris will be making a special detour stop at the Mitchel Athletic Complex en route to Foxboro Stadium to face the New England Revolution on July 14th.

The first One-Thousand fans in attendance will receive an authentic Long Island Rough Riders/ Richmond Savings Bank Water Bottle.

General Admission tickets for this match are $15, with children under five free. Tickets are available through the team website at www.liroughriders.com or by calling the Long Island Rough Riders front office at (516) 671-1585.
