Long Island Rough Riders News Release
Harrisburg, PA; July 27, 2005 - The Long Island Rough Riders' playoff hopes were all but dashed, as they were defeated by the Harrisburg City Islanders 5-2 Wednesday night in Harrisburg, PA.
Knowing they would be fighting an uphill battle, the Rough Riders came out on all cylinders. Derrick Etienne struck first, scoring in the5th minute on a cross from Shaun Higgins to give the Rough Riders the early 1-0 lead. But the lead would be short-lived, and their last of the night. In the 17th minute, Sumed Ibrahim began what would be a record-setting night for him, scoring on a volley to tie the game at 1-1.
Shane Crawford continued the Islanders assault, adding his own notch to the scoring post in the 24th minute to give Harrisburg City the 2-1 lead. Ibrahim, far from finished, added his second goal of the night on a pass from Steve Fisher in the 33rd minute to extend the lead to 3-1.
Derrick Etienne would not let the Rough Riders go down without a fight. In the 37th minute, Etienne took a pass from Moussa Sy and sent it past helpless Islanders goal keeper Dave Kern to narrow the lead to3-2.
Sumed Ibrahim, however, would not be stopped. In the 44th minute, on an assist by Fisher, Ibrahim completed the first hat trick in Harrisburg City Islanders history and gave his team a comfortable 4-2 lead going into halftime.
The second half saw the scoring exhibition dialed down, but not completely finished. The lone goal of the half came courtesy of Matt Tanzini, who received a pass from teammate Adam Schultz down the line and beat Rough Riders keeper Paul Grafer for the easy put-in and a 5-2 lead. That was all the Islanders needed, with their defense buckling down and allowing only three shots in the half.
The Rough Riders now must win all their remaining games and hope for some help from their USL Second Division counterparts to have any chance of making the playoffs. They continue their push this Saturday, July 30 th at 7:30 PM against the Charlotte Eagles at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY .
