Columbus Destroyers News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Destroyers moved closer to a final roster on Thursday. The Destroyers signed kicker Luis Berlanga and waived defensive specialist Rickie Davis, fullback/linebacker Deon Dyer, kicker Miro Kesic, and wide receiver/linebackers Mike Nizzi and Sir Mawn Wilson, team President David Paitson announced.

Berlanga (5-9, 190, Northwest Missouri State) joins the Destroyers after spending the 2004 season with Northwest Missouri State. He was a 2004 DIIFootball.com First Team All-American and Daktronics Division II all-Southwest Region Second Team selection. In his senior season, he made 74-of-76 extra points and 16-of-19 on field goals.

Davis, Nizzi and Kesic all were in their first AFL Training Camps. Dyer spent five seasons in the NFL prior to joining the Destroyers in 2005. Wilson played in his sixth AFL season in 2005, appearing in seven games with the New York Dragons.

Thursday marked the final day of two-a-days as the Destroyers will practice only once on Friday. The final day of Training Camp will have the players practicing in the morning starting at 8:15 a.m.

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS

Defensive specialist Jerald Brown had an interception during team work in the afternoon session Wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders had a one-handed, over the shoulder touchdown reception in the one-minute drill Defensive specialist Cecil Doggette also added an interception in the afternoon session during full team work

Offensive Assistant/Special Teams Coordinator Chris MacKeown's comments on the day...

His thoughts on the final day of two-a-days went...

"I thought that the energy was still good. The guys are still getting after it. They're fighting through the injuries and being tired. They're giving a great effort. I was happy with it today."

On how difficult the decisions over the next few days will be...

"It's real tough because you bring in a guy because you believe in him and you like him. You still might like him, but it turns into a numbers game because you can't keep everybody. The hardest part of the job is letting one of the guys go that you bring in and still like."

Offensive/Defensive Lineman Brad Greetis' comments on the day...

His thoughts on his first AFL Training Camp...

"That was one of the hardest camps that I have probably been in, hopefully it turns out good."

On what he has been able to learn the past couple of weeks...

"I have learned so much. They go into so much more detail here. It's a little different than the af2 because you go into more specifics here. I have been able to learn a ton from the veterans. Mike Sutton has taught me a lot on pass rushing. And all the technique stuff, you go to the vets and ask them about that."

Training Camp Schedule

The Destroyers continue with the final day of Training Camp with one practice at the Columbus FieldHouse. Practice begins at 8:15 a.m. and will conclude around 10:30 a.m. The players will have the weekend off as the coaching staff determines the final roster.
