Nashville Kats News Release

NASHVILLE, TENN. (Jan. 19, 2006) - The Nashville Kats waived seven players from their training camp roster on Thursday morning in the first round of cuts before the team begins its regular season next week against the New York Dragons.

Nashville waived WR/LB Maurice Brown, OS Rocco Forgione, WR/DB Deon Giddens, DS Eric Joyce, WR/LB Alonzo Nix, OL/DL Andrew Tippins and OL/DL Paul White. All seven players were rookies, and all seven are eligible to be re-signed to the team's practice squad next week if they are not claimed by another team.

"This is a tough day," said Kats head coach Pat Sperduto. "You wish you could keep all of them, but you can't. These are good football players, but you can only keep a certain amount of guys, and we have to keep the ones who best fit what we are trying to do."

Each AFL team can carry 37 players on its roster throughout training camp, but must trim its active roster to 24 by the start of the first regular season week. With today's cuts, the Kats roster currently sits at 29, so more moves that will allow Nashville to get under the limit will be coming before Monday, when the team begins its preparations for New York.

In addition to a 24-man active roster, each team is permitted to keep a four-man practice squad. Nashville can sign players to the practice squad on Monday, but players must first clear waivers before joining the team.

Sperduto announced the moves one day after concluding a three-day joint practice session with the Utah Blaze. The session culminated in yesterday's three-team scrimmage with Utah and the Georgia Force at the Titans Practice Bubble. Sperduto gave the team the day off from practice on Thursday, with players coming in for film study and weightlifting sessions. The team will be back on the practice field tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at the Titans Practice Bubble.

The Kats kick off the regular season a week from Saturday at New York. Nashville's home opener comes on Fri., Feb. 3 against the Columbus Destroyers.
