Rosscup Heads to Cubs
January 9, 2011 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
One name involved in the big January 8 trade of Tampa Bay starting pitcher Matt Garza to the Chicago Cubs was former 2009 Princeton Rays' left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup. He was packaged with Garza and outfielder Fernando Perez from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for five highly regarded prospects from the Cubs, including both the Cubs' 2010 organization's minor league "Pitcher of the Year" and "Player of the Year."
The emphasis of the trade is expected to be that Tampa Bay's 2011 starting five-man pitching rotation (with the expected insertion of 2005 P-Ray right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hellickson in place of Garza) will remain very strong with the periodic arrival of the newly acquired prospects over the next 2-3 years to give the TB Rays an extended run as an annual American League playoff contender.
At Princeton, Rosscup was 3-4 with a 2.68 earned run average in 10 games (9 starts). He followed this in 2010 at Hudson Valley with a 3-1 record in 9 games (7 starts) with 35 strikeouts in 35.2 innings pitched and also included one save.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: 2004 P-Ray RHP Wade Davis is already a member of the Tampa Bay Rays' five-man starting rotation on the heels of a 2010 season that saw him finish fourth in the 2010 American League's "Rookie of the Year" balloting.
