Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - First-year pros provided the heroics for the Chico Outlaws Wednesday night at Nettleton Stadium - Bryan Silverman's second home run in as many nights accounted for the game-winning run, while Ben Shockey tossed two-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief to post his first-ever victory as the Outlaws edged the St. George Roadrunners 5-4 for their third straight win.
It was St. George that actually jumped out to an early lead - Greg Lemon's RBI single off Outlaws starter Trevor Caughey in the top of the 2nd put the Roadrunners up 2-0...but in the bottom of the 2nd Chico got on the board when Silverman led off the inning with a walk and eventually scored on a Matt Ceriani sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 ballgame. In the 4th the Outlaws went out in front - after back-to-back walks to Silverman and Julian Benavidez, Todd Gossage singled to left to bring home Benavidez and tie the score...then following a double steal to put runners at second and third, Ceriani singled past the drawn-in infield to plate Silverman and Gossage to give Chico a 4-2 advantage.
Eddy Garabito's run-scoring single in the 5th inning drew St. George to within one...then in the 6th Angel Sanchez homered to left to pull the Roadrunners even. The score remained 4-4 until the bottom of the 7th when, with two outs, Silverman connected off St. George starter Justin Abbott for a high-arcing homer over the left field wall. With the Outlaws now back in front, Shockey proceeded to shut down the Roadrunners league-leading offense - he retired St. George in order in the 8th, then got the first two hitters he faced in the 9th. Shockey walked Liu Rodriguez on a 3-2 pitch, allowing the tying run to reach...but Garabito followed with a pop-up to new Outlaws second baseman Dan Luyben (coincidentally, a rookie) to end the game and give Chico its second straight one-run victory over St. George.
Shockey (1-0) retired seven of the eight batters he faced to pick up the win; Abbott (4-4) went seven innings but allowed five runs on 12 hits to take the loss. Gossage led the Outlaws with three hits, while Ceriani added two hits and three RBI; Silverman finished 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and three runs scored to go along with his game-winning homer...Garabito, Sanchez and Lemon each had two hits to pace the Roadrunners. Wednesday's win improved Chico's second half record to 12-16 and overall mark to 27-43...St. George dropped to 14-13 in the second half and 32-39 for the year. The Outlaws go for the sweep Thursday night when they send right-hander Berek Fasking (2-3) to the mound in the finale of the three-game series; the Roadrunners will throw righty Monte Mansfield (3-2 with St. George, 5-2 overall). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com
