COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Saturday, October 5, 2013) - The Colorado Rapids scored 13 seconds into the match and never looked back, taking a 4-0 lead by halftime and finishing with a 5-1 rout of the Seattle Sounders in front of a sold out crowd at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night. Rookie sensation Deshorn Brown scored almost immediately off the kickoff - the second-fastest goal in league history - and again in the 31st minute to give him nine goals on the season, extending his lead among all MLS rookies.
Seconds into the match, Brown won a flick header to Gabriel Torres, who threaded a ball through the Sounders defense back to Brown, and the Jamaican forward slotted the ball into the net for the fastest goal in Rapids history. Nine minutes later, the Rapids doubled their lead when fellow Rookie of the Year candidate Dillon Powers headed home a quickly taken Vicente SÃÆánchez corner kick.
Brown scored his second of the night in the 31st minute when he beat Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin to a lofted ball from Powers and finished with a left footed strike just inside the 18-yard box. Brown (nine goals, four assists) and Powers (five goals, six assists) are now the top two MLS rookies in both categories.
Just before halftime, Rapids captain Drew Moor made the score 4-0, deflecting in a Hendry Thomas shot from another SÃÆánchez corner kick. Eddie Johnson scored the Sounders' only goal in the 63rd minute, but Rapids Designated Player Gabriel Torres restored the four-goal advantage just before the final whistle, drilling a shot into the side netting in stoppage time for his first goal since joining MLS.
Colorado now sits in fourth place in the Western Conference, and could clinch a playoff spot as early as Wednesday night with a win in San Jose, depending on other results around the league. The match at the Earthquakes will be broadcast live on Altitude and kicks off at 8:30 p.m. MT. The Rapids return home on October 19 for Fan Appreciation Night and Colorado's last home game of the regular season, where they'll battle Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 4 p.m. MT. Tickets to the match, as well as tickets for potential home playoff matches, are available by calling 303-825-GOAL or visiting www.ColoradoRapids.com.
