New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Metairie, LA - Texas Rangers manager and New Orleans native Ron Washington has been named the first guest for the annual "Evening With The Zephyrs" cocktail reception, being held Thursday, January 21st at Rosy's Jazz Hall from 7-9 p.m.
In addition to being first on the guest list, Washington has also been named the first electee for the New Orleans Professional Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2010. Since he will be managing the Rangers at the time of the induction ceremony during the season, Washington will accept the honor at the "Evening With The Zephyrs" event.
"I was overwhelmed to find out about going into the Hall of Fame," Washington said. "All I ever tried to do was go out, play hard, and play the game the right way."
Washington graduated from John McDonogh High School in New Orleans in 1970, and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Royals. After spending six years in the Royals system, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, with whom he made his Major League debut on September 10, 1977.
Washington spent the bulk of his Major League career with the Minnesota Twins from 1981-86, and also played for the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros before ending his career with the Rangers' Triple-A club in Oklahoma City in 1990. He batted.261 in parts of 10 Major League seasons.
In 1991, Washington began a five-year stint as a minor league coach and manager in the New York Mets organization. He then spent 11 years as a coach for the Oakland Athletics, including the final 10 as the team's third base coach, during which time the A's reached the American League playoffs five times.
Washington was named the Rangers' 17th manager on November 6, 2006. He has led the team to consecutive second-place finishes in the American League West, including last year's 87-75 campaign, only the club's second winning season in the last 10 years.
"All I wanted to do after playing was be a Major League third base coach," Washington said. "I never had any dreams about being a manager. Everything after that has just been a bonus."
Fans will have the opportunity to meet Washington, along with other guests to be announced shortly, at "Evening With The Zephyrs." Tickets are $30 per person, or $100 for a group of four. The ticket price includes food and drink for all guests, and The Regg Sanders Jazz Trio will be on hand to provide musical entertainment.
