Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Savannah Sand Gnats batted around the order to score six runs in the fifth inning in an 8-2 win over the Rome Braves Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats combined for six extra-base hits in the game, including two triples from Francisco Plasencia and a home run off the bat of Dee Brown.

Carlos Martinez benefited from Savannah's hot bats, earning his second win of the season. Martinez allowed just two runs while scattering eight hits and four strikeouts over 5.2 innings of work. Jack Spradlin came on in the sixth and threw 2.1 innings of shutout ball. Coby Mavroulis closed out the win, fanning two batters in a perfect ninth.

Jonathan Castro led off the big fifth inning with a single to right and came in to score two batters later on an RBI double from Ofilio Castro. The Gnats loaded the bases on a walk and a hit batter to set the stage for Scott Schade who delivered a triple to straightaway center to clear the bases.

The Gnats were not finished in the inning when Brown came up with two outs and Schade on third and lined Chris Vines' offering over the wall in left for his fourth home run of the season.

Schade's three-run triple gives him six RBI in just two games with the Sand Gnats. Savannah combined for a season-high three triples in the game, led by Plasencia who was the first Gnat this season to have two in a game.

Rome's only runs came in the fourth when the Braves scored two runs on four straight singles to take a short lived 2-1 lead.

For Savannah on offense, Edgardo Baez went 1-for-3 with a single in the fourth, extending his team-leading hitting streak to 15 games, which ties him for fifth in the South Atlantic League.

The Gnats are next in action Monday at Columbus to begin a seven-game game road trip with four games against the Catfish followed by three games in Charleston against the RiverDogs.
