Tampa Yankees News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. - Jorge Mateo broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the seventh and the Tampa Yankees (22-17, 64-44) went on to defeat the Lakeland Flying Tigers (12-24, 46-58), 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Historic Henley Field.
Josh Rogers (W, 7-4) worked around a pair of base runners in the first and cruised the rest of the way through his seven scoreless innings. The southpaw scattered three hits, a walk and a hit-batter while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts. Rogers threw 60 of 82 pitches for strikes.
The T-Yanks spoiled a few early scoring opportunities against LHP Matt Hall. In the third, fourth and fifth innings, Tampa placed pair of runners on base (twice with less than two outs) and failed push a run across. The Yankees finished 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base.
Hall allowed four hits and three walks in five shutout innings, striking out four. The lefty threw 56 of 92 pitches for strikes.
Tampa's offense finally broke through in the seventh against RHP Austin Kubitza (L, 1-1). One out into the frame, Mateo blasted an opposite field home run over the wall in right-center, hitting a toolshed behind the field.
One out later, Gleyber Torres kept the inning going with a single into right. Torres promptly stole second before scoring on a double into the right field corner by Jeff Hendrix, which proved to be the winning run.
RHP Matt Marsh (SV, 6th) took over for Rogers in the eighth and Lakeland cut the lead in half when Ross Kivett crushed a solo home run over the left field wall. Marsh finished the frame and worked around a single in the ninth, preserving the win.
Mateo (3-for-5, HR, RBI, R) hit his seventh home run and tallied his 40th RBI. Hendrix (1-for-4, 2B, BB, RBI, 2SB) is on a seven-game hitting streak and is now 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts since joining Tampa. Rashad Crawford (2-for-5) and Zack Zehner (2-for-4) had multi-hit games.
The two-game series concludes with a 1:00 p.m. game in Lakeland on Thursday afternoon. RHP Yefrey Ramirez (2-3, 1.96 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Yankees against RHP Jeff Thompson (7-5, 3.80 ERA) for the Flying Tigers.
