Rodriguez Magnificent in Impressive 7-1 Win

August 19, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA-Fernando Rodriguez won his third straight start and hit double-digits in wins for the year as Rancho Cucamonga cruised to a 7-1 win before a crowd of 6,468 at the Epicenter Friday. The Quakes (24-30, 56-68) improved to 13-6 against the 66ers (25-28, 64-59) this year and closed to within 3.5 games of first-place Lancaster in the Southern Division.

The Quakes never trailed in this game, opening the scoring with a run in the first. Hainley Statia walked with one away and went to third on Freddy Sandoval's double to dead center field. Inland Empire then left the infield back and Michael Collins took advantage, picking up an RBI groundout to second. The Sixers came back to tie it at 1-1 on Josh Womack's sacrifice fly in the top of the second, but Rancho Cucamonga took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Cliff Remole led off with a double and scored on Drew Toussaint's two-base hit, and Josh LeBlanc then plated his former teammate at Southern University with an RBI single to center to make it 3-1. Sandoval iced the game with a two-run homer to deep right field in the fifth, and the Quakes added a run later that inning before Pat Reilly capped the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, was simply spectacular. After allowing a run on three hits in the first two innings he allowed just two singles in his final six frames, tying a season-high with eight innings pitched as he improved to 10-7 on the year. All told he allowed a run on five hits (all singles), with two walks and four strikeouts. Aaron Jensen (3-8) fell to 0-7 in 10 road starts for Inland Empire this year as the Quakes roughed him up for six runs (five earned) and six hits in 4.1 innings. He walked four and struck out two. Sandoval went 2-5 with a double and his fifth home run of the year (and first since June 24th), while Reilly also had two hits and Statia drew three walks and scored two runs.

Game two in this three-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday and will be carried live on KWRM-AM 1370 and online at www.rcquakes.com. The game will not be on TV. Robert Mosebach (10-6, 3.04 ERA with Cedar Rapids) will make his Quakes debut against 66ers lefty Justin Thomas (7-3, 4.70 ERA), and the first 2,500 fans will receive a free Quakes team stone courtesy of Vineyard Bank.
