SEVERAL ROCKIES PLAYERS AMONG LEADERS IN FIRST- HALF PIONEER LEAGUE STATISTICS!
The Casper Rockies wrapped up the first-half of the season with a 5-3 win at home against the Billings Mustangs on July 27, 2004. Casper finished fourth overall in the Pioneer League's Southern Division with a 17-20 record. The team fluctuated in and out of first place at the beginning of the season and ended only two and a half games out of the top spot in a very close divisional race.
Despite falling short of winning the first-half title, numerous Casper Rockies players are among the top ten in many of the Pioneer League's statistical categories.
Starting pitcher Samuel Deduno is currently leading the entire Pioneer League with 60 strikeouts. Deduno has the fifth best ERA (3.23). Franklin Morales, who is also a starting pitcher for the Rockies, has 45 strikeouts placing him third in that category.
Catcher Ryan Fox (.663), first baseman Mike Davies (.615), and outfielder Justin Nelson (.544) are in second, fourth, and ninth place respectively in the slugging percentage category. Fox and Nelson are also tied in fifth place for the most home runs with a total of eight each. Additionally, Ryan Fox has an on-base percentage of .478 which places him seventh. Mike Davies has the fourth best batting average in the league at .376.
Another Rockies outfielder, Seth Smith, is among the leaders in three categories. Smith is seventh in extra-base hits with 16. He is also sixth in the doubles category with 11 and ranks ninth in hits with a total of 43. Third baseman Dustin Hahn, who also has 11 doubles, is tied with Smith. Hahn and outfielder Steven Boggs both have eight stolen bases that tie them for sixth place. Casper Rockies second baseman Eric Young Jr. still leads the league in stolen bases with 14 despite not playing since July 15 due to a facial injury.
The statistics above came from The Sports Network, the official statistical company of 2004 Minor League Baseball. These stats were complete through July 27, 2004. All up- to-date statistics can be found on the Casper Rockies website at www.casperrockies.com.
Casper began the second half of the season July 28 with games at Ogden, Utah. The team will return to Casper for a seven game home stand starting August 2. The Rockies will face the Idaho Falls Chukars in the first three games followed by the Ogden Raptors.

(NEW!) CASPER ROCKIES PITCHER GETS PROMOTED!!
As a result of his solid performances for the Casper Rockies, closing pitcher Chris Buechner (BEEK-NER) has been called up to play for the Tri-City Dust Devils. The Dust Devils, located in Pasco, Washington, are the Class A short-season affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
As of July 20, Buechner had an ERA of 3.95 in 13.2 innings for the Rockies. His record was 1-1 with 4 saves and a total of 14 strikeouts. Buechner will be joining former Casper Rockies catcher Luke Sargeant, who was moved to Tri-City at the beginning of the Rockies season.
